RenewTowns FAQs
-
The Cambridge RenewTowns Project focuses on revitalizing downtown Cambridge by filling vacant spaces with thriving, community-selected businesses. The centerpiece of the initiative is a storefront pitch competition, providing entrepreneurs the chance to win one year of free rent in a historic building on Main Street, along with mentorship and resources to support their success.
-
Entrepreneurs and small business owners submit their ideas for a storefront. Participants will attend workshops to refine their business plans, branding, and pitches. Final pitch videos will be uploaded to an app, where community members can vote for their favorite ideas. Judges will choose the winner from the community favorites.

The Ward’s Mercantile building presents an exciting opportunity to foster a dynamic, multi-tenant space that reflects the evolving needs of downtown Cambridge. The vision for the building includes a mix of businesses and gathering spaces that prioritize accessibility, creativity, and community engagement. The entire building will be alcohol-free, creating an inclusive environment suitable for a broad audience. Potential uses include a food-focused concept designed for takeout or grab-and-go service, small-scale retail, and shared workspaces. Additionally, the building may offer flexible gathering areas that support evening activities such as live performances, board games, and literary events, while the upper level could serve as a makerspace for artists, hobbyists, and creative entrepreneurs or dynamic co-working space. By embracing a collaborative and adaptable approach, the Ward’s Mercantile building aims to become a vibrant hub that enhances the local economy and enriches the community experience.
